I have created roewatch.co.uk because I have been fascinated, intrigued and concerned about roe deer for forty years. I hope my love for them, together with my photographs, films and comments will both grab your attention and entertain you.

Welcome to Roe Watch

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Halliday is a northeasterner. Born and brought up on a farm outside Durham, he has lived mainly out-bye in Northumberland during his adult life.  His largely self-employed working life as a lawyer and psychotherapist provided enough time and space to pursue his passionate interest in the outdoors, nature, the Arts and Literature in particular.  Now retired he has edited an anthology of poetry about ageing, Bring Me No Rocking Chair (Bloodaxe). Together with his wife he has been working to develop a 17.5 acre site as a nature reserve. He has been lucky enough to stalk roe deer for over 45 years, on some of the finest estates in Northumberland: Matfen, Whitfield, Featherstone, Blenkinsopp and elsewhere.  For the Love of the Roe is his homage to one of our most beautiful and fascinating wild creatures.

For the Love of the Roe is a personal account of the author’s own life as a stalker and the life of the deer and how these two lives have been woven together.  The tone throughout is engaging, containing interesting and often amusing stories, asides and anecdotes which are not the normal fare for books about field sports.

The writer clearly feels strongly about many aspects of stalking and field sports and is not afraid to say so.  As the foreword says ‘At a time when the shooting community is under increasing scrutiny, it is welcome that not everyone is entrenched, and here is someone who is prepared to stick his head above the parapet, quite refreshing!’

At its heart, and it is full of heart, the book is essentially a love story. The photographs illustrate a deep respect for the deer and nature in general.

The book deserves a place in the library of books about nature and stalking in particular.
